EirGrid, ESB Networks, Glen Dimplex Ireland, Intel and SSE Airtricity are the organisations involved in the deployment of the RealValue Trial in Ireland. Read more about the team members and their roles below.
Responsible for leading the delivery of the system integration of the aggregated response from the deployment of SETS devices in Ireland, as EirGrid’s primary role in the project.
John works on EirGrid’s DS3 Programme (‘Delivering a Secure Sustainable Electricity System’) which seeks to address the challenge of integrating world-leading levels of renewable generation onto the power system in Ireland and Northern Ireland. Prior to joining EirGrid, John spent seven years working for National Grid TSO in Great Britain, most recently as European Codes Development Manager, responsible for the negotiation and national implementation of European legislation. John acts as the primary contact for EirGrid Group for the RealValue Project. Responsible for the coordination and control of activity on the project as well as ensuring the administrative and financial reports from EirGrid Group are fulfilled. Represents EirGrid Group at the RealValue Project Steering Board.
Smart Networks Engineer
Cristina is currently a team member of the Smart Networks within ESB Networks, working on a number of innovative projects and responsible for R&D activities and strategic guidance to the utility. Prior to joining the Smart Networks team Cristina worked for ESBI where she designed a number of 110/38 kV and MV AIS and GIS substations for ESB. Cristina has also project managed a number of contestable connections by providing consultancy services to ESB Networks for Independent Power Producers (IPP).
Mark holds a primary degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Limerick. Prior to joining ESB Networks, Mark spent six years working for EirGrid TSO. Whilst in EirGrid, Mark worked in the Operations department, responsible for developing the annual program of transmission outages to facilitate major infrastructural projects and compiling detailed Energisation Instructions outlining a safe switching procedure to facilitate the connection of new plant on to the Transmission System. Mark is currently a team member of the Smart Networks function within ESB Networks, responsible for all R&D activities and strategic guidance to the utility.
Smart Networks Engineer
Owen holds a Masters (BEng) in Electrical and Electronic Engineering and an MSc in Smart Grids from Queen University, Belfast. Prior to joining ESB Networks Owen worked as a Project Engineer for a Switchgear company designing LV Switchgear and Substations. Owen is currently a team member of the Smart Networks function within ESB Networks, responsible for all R&D activities and strategic guidance to the utility.
Smart Networks Manager
Jonathan is currently in charge of the Smart Networks function within ESB Networks, responsible for insight and long-term vision, Jonathan is responsible for a portfolio of R&D projects and maintaining strategic roadmaps giving guidance to the Utility. This involves close interaction with policymakers, international standardisation bodies, academia, research organisations, SME’s and large-scale enterprise in the areas of Science, Technology, ICT and Innovation.
Director IOT Innovation
David has over 20 years ICT industry experience. His career has ranged from enterprise IT, product development and research & innovation. For the past seven years he has worked in Intel Labs where he currently leads the IOT Innovation & Research practice with the mission of identifying, demonstrating and seeding disruptive business models that capitalise on IOT and may expand Intel’s core business. He has built and engaged in a variety of internal and collaborative research initiatives and is responsible for a number of H2020 projects. David holds several patents and represents Intel on a number of external bodies.
Michael has worked in a number of roles within Intel for the last 16 years. He has led teams during the technical transfer of Intel manufacturing processes to Fab24 in Ireland and works as a technical program manager within Intel Labs. He holds a Bsc in Financial Information Systems from TCD. He holds a Masters in Cloud Computing from UCD and is also PMP certified with the Project Management Institute. Within RealValue, Michael owns the development, delivery and maintenance of the IT infrastructure used to manage and control the various domestic appliances and sensors used within the project.
Ricardo is Principal Investigator and Senior Research Fellow in the National Centre for Applied Data Analytics (CeADAR) at University College Dublin and is also responsible for EU Research & Innovation. Prior to joining CeADAR he was Adjunct Lecturer and Post-Doctoral Researcher in Trinity College Dublin and Dublin City University. Ricardo holds a B.Sc. in Computer Science from University of Leon (Spain), and M.Sc. in Networks and Distributed Systems and a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Trinity College Dublin. His research and industry background includes areas such as wireless networking, distributed systems, signal processing, sensor data fusion, real-time analytics, machine learning and entrepreneurship. Ricardo has recently joined the RealValue team at SSE to work on analysis of data from the Irish demo.
Knowledge Transfer Manager
Alice joined SSE’s Real Value project team in October 2016. Prior to the Real Value project she worked in SSE’s corporate policy team where she has been since 2011. When she isn’t working on Real Value she is working on completing her EngD project which explores the impact energy system modelling tools have on policymaking.
Senior Data Scientist
David is a Senior Data Scientist in the Centre for Applied Data Analytics (CeADAR), based in University College Dublin. He has worked on many Industry focused data analytics projects in areas such as text, image, sentiment and financial market analytics.
David holds a PhD in Computer Science from University College Dublin. His research background includes Signal Processing, Bioinformatics and Information Theory. David’s current interests are focused on Blockchain technology and Data Analytics. David has recently joined the RealValue team at SSE to work on analysis of data from the Irish demo.
Danny Murray is a Project Coordinator at SSE Airtricity having joined the company in 2013. Danny joined SSE Airtricity after completing his Masters in Journalism. He previously worked in different media outlets before taking up a position with SSE Airtricity. Danny joined The RealValue Project in March 2016 as a project coordinator. He is mainly responsible for Data Protection, Compliance and other day-to-day tasks within RealValue. Outside of RealValue he is currently learning Russian and remains involved in broadcasting.
Strategy Programme Manager
David works as part of SSE’s Strategy and Innovation team. In his role he focuses on the delivery of business strategic goals in the areas of Energy Storage and Demand Side Management. David sits on the RealValue Project Steering Committee and is the main point of contact for SSE. As Strategy Programme Manager, he is responsible for ensuring the business deliverables are met and carried out in accordance with best practice principals.
Grace O’Connor is a project coordinator for the RealValue project at SSE Airtricity. Grace joined SSE Airtricity in 2013. Grace was a key member of the E-Services Team before joining The RealValue Project in August 2015. Grace is responsible for day to day project activities and managing various elements of the RealValue activities including; finance, administrative control, and recruitment.
